Welcome to a conference spotlight
Riding the Waves conference!
Today we have Sarah Wendell who will be presenting the workshop CRASHING WAVES OF CLIMAX:
Romance Clichès & How To Avoid Them.
Sarah Wendell is author of the book Everything I Know About Love, I Learned from Romance Novels, co-author of the book, Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches’ Guide to Romance Novels, and co-founder of Smart Bitches Trashy Books.com, one of the most popular blogs examining romance fiction. The site specializes in reviewing romance novels, pondering the history and future of the genre in digital form and in print, and bemoaning the enormous prevalence of bodacious pectorals adorning male cover models.
In her quest to celebrate the romance genre and the women who read and write it, Sarah has appeared on Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Gayle King Show on The Oprah Winfrey Network, the Canadian Broadcasting Company’s Steven and Chris Show, NPR’s All Things Considered and on Too Many Books. She has been quoted in People Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The New York Post, USA Today, New Jersey Monthly, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Los Angeles Times Book Blog, Redbook, Metro:New York, and Publishers Weekly.
Tell us about yourself in 10 words or less.
Happy and content, most notably when reading.
Have you presented sessions at previous conferences, for RWA or other organisations?
Yes, though they were organizations, with a Z, so I’m not sure that counts? Kidding! I’ve presented at RWA (US) National, regional RWA conferences and chapter events, and at technology conferences in New York City, such as Tools of Change in Publishing.
What will participants take away from this session? (OR what is the key outcome or take-home message?)
Clichés exist for a reason: overuse. They’re like writing shorthand, and after a while, there are some phrases and ideas within romance that become so common they might go unnoticed. Except by me. Because I dislike clichés. A lot. Original language is a good thing for both writers and readers!
Will there be hands-on exercises or audience participation?
I envision a great deal of interpretive dance regarding man titty and the question of how many abdominal muscles are too many! We may also discuss mullets.
Which members will benefit most from this session?
The parties really sound like fun. I am looking forward to meeting all the people who have been introducing them selves to me on facebook and my blog – and the other presenters! They sound interesting.
What is the best part/aspect of conference for you?
It’s in Australia, which is the other side of the planet. And really, if you’re in Sydney thinking it’s too far, I’m coming from New Jersey. I’m going to be on that plane so long, I’ll have to pay property taxes! So come on over!
Anything you’re particularly looking forward to at the 2013 Riding The Waves conference in Fremantle?
The whole of it! I am excited to be returning to Australia. SO excited. Also I will buy all your TimTams so hide a few before I get there. It’ll be like the New Zealand Marmite shortage when I’m done with the grocery store.
Thank you, Sarah!
Sarah is also presenting the workshop GETTING YOUR FEET WET: BLOGGING 101.
