Flooded Communities Book Appeal Update

Esk Library

This is the first in a series of posts about the delivery of books via our Flooded Communities Book Appeal, so you can see where your donations have been going. Thanks to everyone who has sent in books – we appreciate each and every one!

Esk is in the Somerset Shire which is in south east Queensland (north west of Brisbane).

The shire was hit badly during the floods earlier this year – in the picture on the right, you can see some of the devastation. The library is the smaller white building in the middle of the photo and the Council office is the long building to the left of the library. Brisbane Valley Highway is to the left of the photo, completely under water.

When RWA contacted Anita Aurisch, the Regional Librarian for the Somerset Regional Council Libraries, and offered to send books, she said:

“Thank you for your lovely offer. Esk library and the central administration area were inundated with water on Monday 10 January, and as a result, we have lost many items and most of the furniture. We would be very appreciative of your offer of new and near new items. Thank you so much for thinking of us during this challenging time.

“Our library administration work is based in the main Esk library, so we lost many new items as well as stock already on the shelves. In addition to this, we have a shed for storage of library furniture and books at the Esk depot (top right of the photo), which was also flooded.

“On a brighter note, all the library staff are safe and well and we are now focused on the clean-up and restoration required so that in time, we can re-open our wonderful community space.”

We sent over 300 brand new books in a variety of genres, including romance, crime, thriller, young adult, biographies, women’s fiction and paranormal. One of our members, Tina Clark, drove our donation out to Esk and handed it over in person. She and her family used the drive as a chance to look around the gorgeous Somerset Shire and have a picnic lunch.

The photo on the left is Tina (third from left) and her two sons, with the librarians from Esk Library and the boxes of books she delivered. We’d organised that the books would arrive when the library was holding a working bee, called “All Hands On Deck” day.

After the delivery, Anita emailed me to say, “We are overwhelmed by your generosity and are excitedly adding your donations to our collection. We are getting there – we will reopen the library on Monday 28 March. It’s lovely to think that you are helping so many others as well – giving is such a wonderful thing that human beings can do for each other!”

Thanks again to all the authors, members and friends who donated books to make this a reality.

We’d also like to thank our corporate donors:

Harlequin Australia

Macpherson Press

Griffin Press

Wombat Books

Blackstone Audio, Inc

Stay tuned for more snapshots of places your donations have turned up!
