Rallying to a good cause – the Conference Charity

Guest Post by Alison Brideson

It is only a week until the start of the RWA Conference. This will be my 14th Conference and I never tire of them.

One of the really positive moves of the last few years has been the introduction of a charitable fundraiser as part of the Conference activities. In my experience Romance Writers are unfailingly generous to each other and to the wider community and this year is no exception.

It has been my pleasure and honour to take responsibility for this year’s fundraiser, due in part to my involvement as a Board member of the Firefighters Charity Fund Melbourne.   Firefighters and Romance Writers…seemed a match made in heaven.

One of the supported charities of the Firefighters Charity Fund is the OTIS FOUNDATION. We aim to support smaller charities that don’t necessarily get the big public recognition but quietly go about doing wonderful work on a shoestring budget.  OTIS FOUNDATION provides  retreats for women and men living with breast cancer at no accommodation charge.   The philosophy behind Otis fitted beautifully with RWA’s support of women’s cancers so it really has been a happy pairing.  Otis administer properties across Australia and I recall a dear friend I lost to breast cancer found these retreats were an important part of her cancer journey so I am very proud to offer what help I can to Otis.

Sunday is the official Charity day and we will have half a dozen firefighters braving the conference to sell raffle tickets and help us raise some money for Otis.  In addition to the Raffle there will be a Silent Auction (more on the prizes below). In addition to this, the proceeds from the RWA Auction on the Saturday will also be going to Otis (thank you RWA!).

So bring some spare $ because we have some fabulous things on offer:

1st prize in the Saturday raffle will be a Conference “Starter Pack” – Your next conference fee PLUS accommodation!

1st prize in the Sunday raffle will be an iPad 2. Yes you heard me! An iPad 2 – very generously donated by the SARA writing group.

Silent Auction donations include:

  • A Valerie Parv critique
  • Book packs from Dymocks and Harlequin Mills and Boon
  • Signed copies of books from our favourite authors and lovely handcrafted goodies from our talented members.
  • Goodie packs from writers and writers groups

All money collected by the firefighters on the day will go directly to the Otis Foundation. If you wish to make a direct, tax deductible donation, we will have those facilities available too (cash or cheque only. NO CREDIT CARD

Once again, thank you to all our donors and to those of you who will help make this a successful day.

  1. This is a great cause, Alison, and I’m so happy to support it. Two family members and a friend have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the past few years, and I also lost an aunty to it many years ago.

    Unfortunately it’s all too common.

It’s a wonderful cause and a great choice for the conference. (And I’m sure the recipients of the retreats will really appreciate it.)

As a Firefighter and Board Member of the Firefighters Charity Fund Melbourne, it gives us great pleasure in assisting in our small way to helping a successful and fruitful conference and, importantly, raising some much needed and deserving funds for OTIS. A fantastic organisation and initiative, borne from a charitable philosophy and the willingness to assist.

We all look forward to playing our part.

  3. Allison,
    Such a wonderful cause,
So happy we all get to help support it,
    Suzi Love

  4. I can’t thank our members enough for their support for this day. The response has been overwhelming. We have some great prizes.

And a huge thanks to Shane, Mick, Eric and the others who will be coming to help us out on the day.
