Welcome to another of our Conference Spotlights from the DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER conference.
Dr John Barletta PhD is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Brisbane. For nearly 30 years he has enjoyed helping individuals, couples, families, practitioners and organisations deal with a range of motivational, emotional, relational and professional issues. John, a graduate of Queensland University of Technology (DipT, GradDipCouns), Australian Catholic University (BEd), University of Queensland (MEdSt) and Ohio University (PhD), is responsible for over 200 contributions to publications and conferences. He held a senior academic position for many years, and is a member of the Australian Psychological Society and the College of Clinical Psychologists.
At Diamonds Are Forever, John is presenting a workshop aimed at ALL writers called THE JOYS AND CHALLENGES OF ROMANTIC ATTRACTION
This workshop examines romantic relationships from an attachment perspective, and provides writers with psychological information about how and why people connect romantically. The session discusses the relative contributions of nature and family-of-origin to the development of attachment. Gender differences in attraction and temperament will be explored in ways that facilitate character development for writers. Finally, the challenges in romantic attraction will be addressed with potential remedies. This session is engaging, interactive, down-to-earth, enjoyable, and applied.
Tell us about yourself in 10 words or less.
I enjoy supporting/challenging people to develop a good life.
Have you presented sessions at previous conferences, for RWA or other organisations?
Yep…for RWA three times (Bris/Syd/Melb)—and about 100 other sessions for various associations since 1990 (I started very young).
Will there be hands-on exercises or audience participation?
There will certainly be lots of opportunity for people to share questions and comments—along with ideas and possibilities. I thrive on interruptions!
Do you use examples (from your own books, other books, movies etc)?
If I used examples from my books/articles I’d put people into a boredom-induced coma.
Which members will benefit most from this session?
Everyone from novices to experts—for very different reasons (trust me, I’m a Psychologist).
Any advice for conference first-timers?
Relax, focus, and know that you’ll never forget your first-time!
What is your latest/current/upcoming book release and where can members find out more about you?
The Home Therapist by John Barletta & Jan Bond, Australian Academic Press, released March 2012.
