Conference Spotlight ~ Harlequin

Welcome to another of our Conference Spotlights from the

Today we have some information from our Platinum Conference Sponsor – Harlequin.

Haylee Kerans, Publishing Manager at Harlequin Enterprises Australia, has come over to the Romance Writers of Australia blog to share some very exciting news…

What is all the fuss about?

As of the 10th August, Harlequin Australia is officially opening the doors to submissions from local authors (authors living in Australia and New Zealand), for publication in our single title print programmes, under the Harlequin Mira and Harlequin Teen imprints. We will be accepting submissions from agented and unagented authors, as well as self-published authors.

Why is this exciting?

At Harlequin Australia we have long been champions of Australian and New Zealand voices, with some of the best series authors coming from our shores, but now we have the opportunity to publish local authors in our single title programmes as well. We know just how much unmined talent we have in Australia and New Zealand and we can’t wait to find the next big stars of publishing. This is a major opportunity for aspiring authors to get their work into the hands of one of the world’s leading publishers of women’s fiction and into print.

What are we looking for?

Strong, commercial works for adults and young adults in fiction and non-fiction. This can be anything from a gritty contemporary YA title to epic romance, from medieval fantasy to a how-to guide on Motherhood. If you’ve got a great story, we want to publish it!

What are we hot for right now?

For Mira (Adult):

  • Erotica
  • Historical Romance
  • Commercial literary fiction
  • Memoir

For Harlequin Teen (YA):

  • Dystopian
  • Fantasy
  • Contemporary

Why pitch to Harlequin Australia?

If you are a romance author, then you know that Harlequin IS romance. While we love — and succeed with — titles in other genres, we truly appreciate romance, know what good romance is, and know how to make it sell. We also look after our authors: from acquisition to publication and beyond, we work with our authors in a partnership to make sure your book is the best it can be in terms of editorial and packaging, and is supported with great initiatives for sales, marketing and PR.

Rachael Johns’ rural romance is an acquisition by Harlequin Australia.

So what are you waiting for? Visit our website for submission information at or Email to take the next exciting step in your writing career!

Thank you Haylee, Harlequin, and Jennifer St. George.

Our next spotlight is on the 8th August.

  1. That is great news! I can’t see the Aus submission guidelines but I guess they’ll be updated when submissions open on the 10th?
