Conference Spotlight ~ Choc Lit

Welcome to another of our Conference Spotlights from the

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER conference.

Today we have some information from our Conference Supporter – Choc Lit.

Have you got what it takes to be Choc Lit’s first Australian author?

Time is running out to enter our Search for an Australian Star competition …

We are an award-winning UK independent publisher looking to add some Aussie heat and glamour to our tasty selection of fiction.  Dream of being published internationally? Write romance with irresistible heroes? Then our Search for an Australian Star competition could be for you!

We would like to give an aspiring romance writer the opportunity to be published and join our team of talented authors. This is your chance to see your novel distributed (in print and digitally) both within Australia and abroad!

If you think you’ve got what it takes to be our first Australian author then we would love to hear from you, but before submitting, please take a moment to read the tips and guidelines that we have provided below.

Submission criteria

Please also note that the deadline for submissions is 31st August 2012 — not long to go so get writing!

To be considered for the competition your novel must be:

  • romantic fiction which must include the male hero’s point of view
  • for an adult audience
  • 70,000 to 100,000 words long
  • in English
  • completed – we can’t consider works in progress
  • previously unpublished
  • not currently accepted by any other publisher or agent
  • contemporary, historical, suspense, fantasy, paranormal, etc.

We are not looking for erotic fiction, although sex scenes that develop the plot are fine!

To be eligible to enter, you must live in Australia.

Submission guidelines

If your novel meets the above criteria, then please send us a synopsis in an email to: submissions@choc-lit.com.
Please do not send as an attachment as your email will be lost in our spam folder and you won’t get a response!

Remember that a synopsis should provide the whole story of your novel in a nutshell – the main characters, their motivations and a summary of the plot, including the ending. Please also include a paragraph about yourself which details any writing experience, contests won, social media activity and web presence.  It’s important to sell your story and yourself – you only get one chance!

Please do not send unsolicited submissions by post – you will not get a response.

The next stage

If your synopsis tickles the taste buds of our editorial team, we will request, via email, that you complete a Submission Form and submit this together with your complete novel in MS Word or RTF (text file). Please present these as professionally as possible. If you need any help with manuscript layout, there are lots of pointers available on the Romance Writers of Australia website. (Eleni’s note: also this blog and Hearts Talk as well)

All submissions will be reviewed, in the first instance, by the Choc Lit Tasting Panel- a team of independent readers who can be quite picky about badly presented manuscripts. Don’t give them an excuse to reject!

When can short-listed authors expect to hear from us?

We will email you promptly to say that we’ve received your submission. The winner of the Search for an Australian Star competition will be announced in December 2012. The overall winner will be chosen with the help of the Australian Romance Readers Association’s members.

We look forward to receiving and reading your submissions. Good luck and happy writing!
