RWA Get Fresh in ’15 proud to support The Indigenous Literacy Foundation

The RWA Get Fresh in ‘15 team is excited to be supporting the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) at this year’s conference.

The ILF was originally founded in 2005 by Suzy Wilson and by 2011 was set up as a not-for-profit charity. The foundation aims to raise literacy levels and create opportunities for indigenous children living in remote and isolated regions and uses creative strategies to engage with children and their families, including: providing books to families, creating links between families, schools and libraries, facilitating writing and publishing of books in the child’s first language and ensuring that indigenous Australian children living in remote communities have access to a wide variety of literature.

“No matter how NAPLAN data is represented, or what very minimal progress has been made over the years, we cannot ignore or sugar-coat the fact that Indigenous children in remote and very remote locations are being significantly outperformed by non-Indigenous students and students living in metro locations. One clear stat shows that between 40% and 60% of Indigenous children in very remote locations across WA, SA and NT are achieving below minimum standard in Reading in Year 3. This is certainly something as a nation we cannot ignore.”  (From ILF website)

We believe the ILF is doing incredible work and we are working on some creative ways to raise funds next year’s conference. But you don’t have to wait until the conference; you can contribute by visiting the website.

We look forward to hearing from ILF ambassador Dr Anita Heiss, a member of the Wiradjuri nation, ILF ambassador, author, poet, satirist and social commentator. Anita will speak at a Sunday plenary session and share some time with us over the weekend.
