A Writer’s Life: Ditching Perfection

Today we are starting a new feature on the RWA blog, where we interview our members about their writing lives.   Today’s guest is Anna Hackett.  This column first appeared in this month’s Hearts Talk, the RWA newsletter.  So if you are a member, don’t forget to read it.  And if you aren’t, you might want to join, now that you’ve seen what you’re missing out on!

Anna-Hackett2-208x300When I started writing this article, I tried to think about the things I’d like to go back and tell my younger writer self. Little pearls of wisdom I wish I’d known when I first started writing. The list got a little long…and many of those things I think I just needed to experience and grow through as part of my journey as a writer.

But one thing stood out.

There is one thing that made a big difference in my writing career and it is the one thing I wish I could have realized sooner.

That thing: ditching the pursuit of perfection.

Now, many of us are conditioned to think we need to achieve perfection in our lives (especially women!) We think we need the perfect house, kept in the perfect condition, with our perfectly behaved kids, our loving, perfect marriage, our perfect, successful career and we have to look perfect while we’re doing all of that! We feel the need to be superwoman and have it all.

There’s a quote by Salvador Dali — Have no fear of perfection. You’ll never reach it. He’s right. Deep down, we all know it.

As writers, we can fall into the trap of needing our writing to be “perfect.” It’s easy to do. When that story idea bursts inside our head, it seems flawless. It’s exciting, thrilling, gut-wrenching. It’s the best story idea ever! Then once we start putting the words to the blank page…well, the story never seems to come out as perfectly as what we had in our head. That’s when the pursuit of perfection becomes harmful. The doubts, the dreaded inner editor, all start whispering (or shouting) at us and suddenly we’re avoiding doing the writing, we’re agonizing over it, we’re procrastinating.

If we do manage to get the draft done, then that pursuit of perfection can have us endlessly editing and polishing—over and over—and we’re never quite finished. But it doesn’t stop there. The elusive pursuit of perfect can mean we never let our story out into the world. We worry it isn’t good enough, that we’ll receive criticism, rejections from agents and publishers, bad reviews from readers and reviewers, no sales. It can paralyze us from doing that thing we’re supposed to do—tell and share the stories inside us.

I don’t remember when I finally decided to give perfection a boot to the face, but it was the best thing I ever did. Suddenly, I was focused on just getting words out—any words, they didn’t have to be perfect or even good ones. Then I focused on editing until the story was done (not perfect!) Then I sent those stories out there as they were, for better or worse.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t keep learning, honing our craft, and improving. We should also always listen to trusted, constructive criticism that helps us become better writers. But if you keep waiting for your stories to be perfect, you’re letting good, great, wonderful, and pretty darn awesome stories get away.

If you’re waiting until your story is so amazing, so perfect that everyone will love it, no one will criticize it, and it’ll never get a bad comment…you’ll never begin, let alone finish.

So, don’t let your good, great and amazing pass you by.

Ditch perfection and begin.

Conference Spotlight ~ Not Your Normal Paranormal panel

Welcome to another of our Conference Spotlights from the DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER conference.

At Diamonds Are Forever,  Eleni Konstantine (moi) is moderating a panel aimed at ALL writers (especially those targetting the paranormal market) called

NOT YOUR NORMAL PARANORMAL: THE OTHER THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

WORKSHOP BLURB:

When you hear ‘paranormal fiction’, do you only think of vampires? Or werewolves? Do you think only books about them sell? Thank goodness, that isn’t the case! Other creatures also go bumpity bump in the night – zombies, fae, goblins, djinn, and even angels. This panel will discuss the paranormal genre as a whole and list examples of authors and their less common beasties.

Not Your Normal Paranormal  panelists

Alexandra Sokoloff is the author of the supernatural thrillers THE HARROWING, THE PRICE, THE UNSEEN, and BOOK OF SHADOWS, the paranormal romance, THE SHIFTERS, the upcoming paranormal trilogy TWIST OF FATE, and the new original e book THE SPACE BETWEEN, a young adult supernatural thriller. She is a Thriller Award winner and a Bram Stoker and Anthony Award nominee. The New York Times Book Review called her novels “Some of the most original and freshly unnerving work in the genre.”

As a screenwriter, Alex has sold original horror and thriller scripts and adapted novels for numerous Hollywood studios, for producers such as Michael Bay, Laura Ziskin, David Heyman, and Neal Moritz. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Writers Guild of America, west, and the board of the Mystery Writers of America.

In non-fiction, Alex is the author of SCREENWRITING TRICKS FOR AUTHORS (AND SCREENWRITERS!), and WRITING LOVE, workbooks based on her internationally acclaimed blog and workshops.

Monique Patterson

Monique Patterson began her publishing career at Avon Books in 1998, which then became a part of HarperCollins.  She is currently Executive Editor at St. Martin’s Press where she acquires women’s fiction, which includes contemporary, historical, paranormal and erotic romance, paranormal fiction, African American fiction and a selective amount of commercial non-fiction, which includes pop culture and celebrity bios for all parts of the list and for all formats.  Some of her current authors are Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lora Leigh, MaryJanice Davidson, Suzanne Enoch, Christina Brooke, Julianne Maclean, Celeste Bradley, Susan Donovan, Alexandra Hawkins, Christine Warren, MaryJanice Davidson, Francis Ray and others.  One of her favorite pastimes. . . is reading.  What a surprise.

Keri ArthurKeri Arthur, author of the New York Times bestselling Riley Jenson Guardian series, has now written more than 25 books. She’s received several nominations in the Best Contemporary Paranormal category of the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Awards and recently won RT’s Career Achievement Award for Urban Fantasy. She lives with her daughter in Melbourne, Australia.

Cathleen Ross

Cathleen Ross’ first novel, Man Hunt sold to Black Lace/Random House. Man Hunt became the number one, best-selling erotic novel on the Publisher’s website in 2006 and has been translated into German. She has also sold to Harlequin, Lyrical Press and Passion in Print.  She is currently self publishing her Forbidden Fantasies series while her agent is shopping her latest work, a paranormal romance, The Demon Prince around NY. When she is not writing, she runs her editing and critiquing service.

Nicola E. Sheridan is a West Australian author who specialises in the use of magic and mythology in modern romance. Published with Eternal Press, Nicola’s books are a different take on a popular genre. Filled with Genies, Manticores, Harpies and many more, she brings forth creatures previously lost in the mists of time, and weaves them, with startling clarity, back into our modern world.

When not writing Nicola is busy studying, and enjoys painting, four-wheel driving and music.  She lives in Western Australia with her husband, two children, two cats and her very, very, geriatric old dog.

Anna Hackett  is the author of several paranormal short stories from Harlequin Nocturne Bites.  She loves action, adventure, romance and is passionate about ancient history.  In addition to vampires and werewolves, her stories star many other paranormal beasties and beings.

When not writing, Anna is a mining engineer who drinks too much Diet Coke.  For more info on her upcoming releases, check out her website: www.annahackettbooks.com

Eleni Konstantine Eleni Konstantine is Fantasy and Paranormal fiction writer, with a number of shorts published. Her stories range from flash fiction to novels. She blames her mother for her writing bug because as a child she was given many books, including illustrated fairytales. That and a love of Greek mythology, and Eleni was destined to become a writer.

Tell us about yourself in 10 words or less.

Interested in creatures that go bumpity bump in the night.

Questions answered by Eleni Konstantine

What prompted you to put together this workshop for “Diamonds are Forever”?

To be honest, Denise Rossetti prompted me to undertake this workshop. In fact, the wonderful title is Denise’s brain child. I thought it was fabulous, and ran with it.

What can participants expect from this session?

A wonderful discussion on the paranormal genre, and the less known creatures that filter throughout it. With such a diverse group on the panel, it’s going to be a great session with lots of information and advice. There will be lists of examples provided.

Which members will benefit most from this session?

Those targetting the paranormal genre.

Anything you’re particularly looking forward to at the 21st RWA conference?

Why this panel, of course! Seriously, being a member of the conference team, I’m looking forward to everything going smoothly, and to meet new friends and catch up with old ones.

Any advice for conference first-timers?

Get ready for information overload – but in a good way! You will meet like minded people who understand that characters live in your head – and that who don’t think you’re crazy. I think the most important bit of advice is to enjoy – don’t worry about not catching every little bit of the conference. It’s not a race of trying to cram in everything into the few days of the conference – though it can feel that way. If you need five minutes to yourself, take them.

What is your latest/current/upcoming book release and where can members find out more about you?

Face-2-Face with…LoveCatsDownunder

At the RWA we like to embrace and support all our members in whatever way we can and with technology being such an integeral part of the way we all operate in today’s modern world we thought it was high time we started to get Face-2-Face with some of the RWA’s online groups.

Yes, there’s not doubt about it. Find a group of like-minded  romance writers and they’ll find a way to meet, share, learn and grow together even when distance seperates them. If you haven’t already then perhaps our latest series of F2F posts (look out for them on the first Wednesday of the moth) will inspire you to become part of an online group yourself.

Group Name: LoveCats Downunder

Area/Region: We’re Australian and New Zealand authors, hailing from places including Canberra to Perth, Christchurch, Mahau and the Sunshine Coast.

Members:  Natalie Anderson, Sharon Archer, Leah Ashton, Rachel Bailey, Zana Bell, Robyn Grady, Anna Hackett, Soraya Lane, Sue Mackay, Emily May, Tracie Sommers, Mel Teshco, Nikki Logan.

Genre: We write category romance in a broad range of lines and genres including Medical, Desire, Historicals, Romance/Sweet, Nocturne Bites, Riva, Sexy, Super Romance and Spice Briefs.

How did we start?

Sharon: “How about… we start a blog for new Harlequin category authors?” I picture Rachel Bailey and Nikki Logan nurturing this idea over a fancy cocktail at the Langham Hotel but the truth is they did it in a brainstorming session on instant messaging on opposite coasts of Australia.

They floated the concept to Tracie Sommers, Mel Teshco, Emily May, Zana Bell and me, Sharon Archer – we were all for it. We were on a roll, setting up a loop to make our discussions easier.

Title ideas got batted around. We wanted something fun – an umbrella for all of us

with our variety of lines. We wanted “cats” since we’re “category” writers and all those delicious “cat” words and puns begged to be used! And we wanted something that located us.

LoveCatsDownUnder! We launched ourselves into the blogosphere in mid-January 2010 with a week-long party. Since then we’ve added more wonderful Cats:  Anna Hackett, Michelle Douglas, Sue Mackay, Natalie Anderson, Soraya Lane and Robyn Grady, and Leah Ashton.

How do we work?

Emily: We share the jobs on the LoveCats blog. Sharon Archer is in charge of our calendar (we call her Roster Cat) and Mel Teshco is our promo cat, posting our weekly schedule on the Romaus loop and to the RWA Cruisin’ the Blogs coordinator. Nikki Logan uploads our new covers and designed the original blog. Tracie Sommers put together our Facebook page. Rachel Bailey started the Sunday Smooches — where we showcase a kiss from a recent release and have a giveaway — and Robyn Grady and I (Emily May) now run the smooches between us. We’re lucky to have a programmer (Tracie Sommers) and a web designer (Leah Ashton) on the team, and they’re currently discussing our new look.

The more technologically savvy people have been great hand-holders for those of us who find it more challenging. I am forever indebted to Sharon for the wonderful step-by-step guide she wrote on how to post a blog and upload photos!

Why I joined?

Sue: I joined the Lovecats as they’re a lively, professional and fun group of authors determined to get known out in the wider world of books. Everyone has something to offer and a variety of romance subgenres is represented. For me having minimal computer knowledge belonging to a group is a distinct advantage too.

Why we like it?

Zana: The best thing about being a LoveCat is always having like-minded women with whom to celebrate and commiserate.  We’ve been together through floods, earthquakes, births, marriages, sickness and, of course the writing of books! In the uncertain world of publishing, it’s wonderful to have a group where we can seek help and ask questions. We’ve pooled knowledge, shared experiences and brainstormed solutions for a myriad of situations and there’s nothing like a bit of cyber support when you don’t know where else to turn.

Extra Curricular Activities?

Tracie: LoveCats love pressies. Apart from having prizes and giveaways on the blog, the LoveCat members have donated prize packs to several charity fundraisers including the Silent Auctions held at the annual RWA conferences and additional fundraisers such as the Australian Romance Reader’s Convention fundraiser for flood and cyclone affected Queenslander’s earlier this year. The other thing the LoveCats love to do is cheer each other on. Last year we had three Ruby finalists Cats: Sharon, Tracie and Robyn, and this year we have a different three we’ll be cheering on at the Awards Night: Emily, Michelle and Natalie.

What have you learned that others might be interested in?

Robyn: Writing can be a lonely occupation. Joining with other like-minded people creates positives all over the place! You share good news, as well as those not-so-happy moments I call ‘thunks’. When you’re stuck, there’s always someone to bounce off and, of course, you reap satisfaction returning the favour. Valuable information is circulated, appreciated, and hopefully passed on further afield. Best of all, friendships are made…bonds that will serve you well on so many levels, in so many ways.

If you have any questions about LoveCatsDownunder or are interested in becoming a member then please contact Rachel, Nikki and the other wonderful Cats ladies via their blog http://lovecatsdownunder.blogspot.com/

Wanted: One Wedding Ring…For Now

The job title was housekeeper, not fiancée! But billionaire cattleman Kirk Deverill couldn’t throw the lovely single mom off his ranch. Especially when he knew the job would help her keep her son. Of course, the eligible bachelor hadn’t expected her to tell everyone she was also Kirk’s bride-to-be! He agreed to Vanessa’s ruse for her adorable son’s sake. And for the opportunity to claim some “husbandly” pleasures. Of course, making their fake engagement a real union was never going to happen. The Outback loner had his reasons…and even the most desirable of women wouldn’t get him to change his mind.

Bookends, LCC – A Literary Agency ~

In week’s post ‘Author-Agent Agreements’ Jessica was asked this question:-  What if a writer on her own gets offered a contract from a small or university press with little or no advance? And what if that writer wants to protect her rights by having an agent look over the contract? Would an agent then agree to taking a small fee from the writer (if the writer wasn’t offered an advance)? Would an agent then also agree to represent that writer with any foreign/film/subsidiary rights? Click on the Blog title to read Jessica’s reply.
