Riding the Waves Conference Spotlight ~ Kim Hudson

Welcome to a conference spotlight

from the

Riding the Waves conference!

Today we have Kim Hudson who will be presenting the workshop THE VOYAGE OF A WRITER.

logo_yellow_bg

kim_hudsonBio

I grew up in the Yukon, a Hero’s daughter with a Cinderella Complex. Basically life taught me many things I would need to write this book. I spent the first half of my career exploring my masculine side, first as a field geologist and later as a federal land claims negotiator. Exploring my feminine side became important as I raised my two daughters. This lead me to study Writing for Film and Television at Vancouver Film School, and take courses on mythology, feminism and psychology including a Jungian Odyssey in Switzerland. This theory was developed by closely observing the archetypal expressions that are all around us in movies, music, television, advertisements and stories of personal growth, including my own. The Virgin’s Promise is my first book.

Tell us about yourself in 10 words or less.

If there was a Practical Philosopher position I would sign up!!

What prompted you to put together this workshop for “Riding The Waves”?

One of the things I most enjoy about my work in archetypes is that people invariably say, love the structure – it’s the story of my life!  I started to wonder if this is more than co-incidence.  Maybe story is a way we learn about our potential and how to navigate the ups and downs of human existence?  This is the inspiration for my talk on The Voyage of the Writer.  It is a combination of translating the structure into real life situations and real life experience.

Will there be hands-on exercises or audience participation?

I like my audiences to have lots of opportunity to engage with the ideas.  Have a pencil and paper to do little exercises and bring your thoughts.

Do you use examples (from your own books, other books, movies etc)?

Definitely, we’ll be looking at The Virgin and the Hero journeys and figuring out where we are at on our personal journeys – will a little inspiration from great movie moments.

Anything you’re particularly looking forward to at the 2013 Riding The Waves conference in Fremantle?

The parties really sound like fun.  I am looking forward to meeting all the people who have been introducing them selves to me on facebook and my blog – and the other presenters!  They sound interesting.

Any advice for conference first-timers?

This will be my first time at a Romance Writers Association gathering as well.  Already they have been warm, fun, and organized.  Looks like we are in for a great event.

Finally, we are so delighted you’re visiting us in Western Australia. Is there anything in particular you’re looking forward to seeing or doing while you’re here?

I want to hike and see the wild flowers.  Soaking up a little beach culture would be great too, although I am too afraid of sharks to go in the water (in my defense I am fine with grizzly bears).  Australia is so different than where I live in northern Canada.

Riding the Waves Conference Spotlight ~ Annie West

Welcome to a conference spotlight

from the

Riding the Waves conference!

Today we have Annie West who will be presenting the workshop CASTING OFF ~ Getting Your First Chapter Off The Ground.

logo_yellow_bg

headshotsmallBio

Annie West has devoted her life to an intensive study of tall, dark, charismatic heroes who cause the best kind of trouble in the lives of their heroines. As a sideline she’s also researched dream-worthy locations for romance, from bustling, vibrant cities to desert encampments and fairytale castles. It’s hard work but she loves a challenge. Annie writes for Mills & Boon Sexy/Presents/Modern. She’s a USA Today bestselling author and winner of several romance writing awards including a Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award in 2012. She’s a long term member of Romance Writers of Australia.

What prompted you to put together this workshop for “Riding The Waves”?

I love starting a new romance. The beginning is one of my favourite parts, when I get a rush of enthusiasm for a delicious new story (whether I’m reading it or writing). I’ve been a reader judge of RWA’s Opening Chapter and High 5  Contests and have seen lots of other writers struggle with issues I’ve had to deal with in my first chapters. At the last RWA conference I realised how much I enjoy the practical, hands on craft sessions and that inspired me to put together this workshop which aims to cover some of those perennial opening chapter issues.

What will participants take away from this session? (OR what is the key outcome or take-home message?)

Participants will take home practical ideas on how to make their opening chapter grab the reader so they want to read on. We’ll examine some key problem areas, how to identify them and what to do about them. After completing the exercises in the session, participants should have the confidence and skills to revisit their manuscript and make the opening shine.

Will there be hands-on exercises or audience participation?

Absolutely. I’m hoping for lots of audience participation. There will discussions as well as short exercises for participants and I’m looking forward to hearing what people come up with. But, don’t fret if you’re shy about reading out your work in front of others. Participants will be encouraged to share (yes, it is possible chocolate may be involved) but those who prefer not to read publicly won’t have to.

Which members will benefit most from this session?

Beginner writers or those who know they have problems crafting their opening chapter.

Any advice for conference first-timers?

Don’t be shy about walking up to other conference goers and introducing yourself. The RWA conference is a great place to network, learn, and make friends with people who have a similar passion to you. Make the most of it, even if you’re shy. We’ve all been first-timers. Romance writers are some of the friendliest people I know and we all love meeting other readers and writers.

9781743068632-0313 SX CaptiveSpotlightWhat is your latest/current/upcoming book release and where can members find out more about you?

My latest book is ‘Captive in the Spotlight’ – Mills and Boon Sexy released March 2013.

Enrico’s quote of the week

It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by.  How else, indeed, to clap the net over the butterfly of the moment?  For the moment passes, it is forgotten; the mood is gone; life itself is gone.  That is where the writer scores over his fellows:  he catches the changes of his mind on the hop.  ~Vita Sackville-West

Have a great week!
