February New Title Releases

February is the month of love. As we look forward to Valentine’s Day, here is a snapshot of some of the new releases available from our members. I’m already poised to click ‘purchase’ on my laptop for several of them!

Remember that we would love the opportunity to hear about your new release and  let all your RWA compatriots know about it too. You can upload covers through the member section of the website. Please login, then go to Published? under the MyRWA drop down menu and choose the ‘send new releases to Hearts Talk‘. Your cover will also appear on the website and be posted to Pinterest.

The deadline for covers is the 8th of the month prior to publication (e.g. If your release is 1 March, your email must be received before the 8 February). This service is available to MEMBERS ONLY. If your cover runs late for any reason, you are welcome to submit it the next month.

January New Releases

Happy New Year everyone. Isn’t January the most wonderful month in Australia? The skies are blue, the mood is sunny and the books are fabulous! This month our members are offering 37 new releases covering every genre and written by established favourites and hot new authors.

I plan to crack open a bottle of bubbles, peruse this list at my leisure, and then choose at least one title by a favourite author and one by an author I’ve never read before. Why don’t you do the same and help to spread the love?

OCTOBER NEW BOOK RELEASES

It’s October and I can feel a frisson of Christmas excitement in the air. Can you? Early Christmas titles are sneaking into bookstores and onto Christmas reading lists. I love Christmas-themed books, so I am pleased I can spot at least one in this month’s member new releases. What about you? Do you enjoy romances tailored to a particular occasion like Christmas or Valentine’s Day?

ROMANCE-RELATED DISCUSSIONS AT THE 2015 SYDNEY WRITERS FESTIVAL

The Sydney Writers Festival (SWF) launched its 2015 program on Thursday, and we are thrilled to see that it features several panels of interest to romance readers and writers and some of our very own stars – catch Avril Tremayne and Victoria Purman in debate during BEYOND DUKES AND DAMSELS on Saturday 23 May. See list below (#8) for details.

Avril Tremayne and Victoria Purman

Talks of interest in date order include (please note: there are some scheduling conflicts if you were interested in all talks below):

  1. Gender, genre and literary prestige (21 May, 10:00 – 11:00, Roslyn Packer Theatre, $14pp) starring Aviva Tuffield, Kate Grenville, Ceridwen Dovey and the 2015 Stella Prize Winner.
  2. The Body, Sin, Sex, Denial (21 May, 11:30 – 12:30, Sydney Dance 1, Free, no bookings) starring Ashley Hay, Robyn Cadwallader, James Boyce, and mortician and memoirist Caitlin Doughty. Really, who can resist a mortician, especially one who is fabulous and funny?
  3. Marie le Moel, The Truth about French Women (21 May, 11:30 – 12:30, Richard Wherret Studio, $14). In conversation with Kirstie Clements
  4. Liane Moriarty: Big Little Lies (21 May, 1:30 – 2:30, Pier 2/3 The Loft, $14). In conversation with Meredith Jaffe. Liane Moriarty is also participating in two other panels, On Deception (21 May) and The Books That Exploded and Why We Fell in Love (24 May), and in another feature talk in Parramatta on 20 May.
  5. Quickies and Corsets: There’s more to the story of women and sex (21 May, 3:00 – 4:00, Sydney Dance 2, Free, no bookings) featuring Lee Kofman, Marie Le Moel, Krissy Kneen and Jane Caro.
  6. Co-Conspirators: Anne Buist and Graham Simsion (22 May, 10:00 – 11:00, Pier 2/3 The Loft, $14)
  7. Robert Dessaix: On How Enid Blyton Changed My Life (23 May, 11 – 11:40, Pier 2/3 Curiosity Stage, Free, no bookings). Okay, this has nothing to do with romance (probably) but how can you resist a literary writer who will stand up and admit to a love of Enid Blyton?
  8. Beyond Dukes and Damsels (23 May, 1:30 – 2:30, Sydney Dance 1, Free, no bookings), starring Jodi McAlister, the indomitable Kate Cuthbert from Escape Publishing, and RWA’s very own Victoria Purman and Avril Tremayne. Not to be missed!!
  9. The Rise and Rise of YA: A look at the fastest growing category in fiction (23 May, 1:30 – 2:30pm, Sydney Dance 2, Free, no bookings) featuring Laurie Halse Anderson, Sally Gardnery, Margo Lanagan and Garth Nix
  10. Keeping it Real: Realistic Issues in Teen Fiction (24 May, 1:30 – 2:30, Sydney Dance 2, Free, no bookings)
  11. Teencon 2015 (24 May, 4:00 – 5:30, Pier 2/3 Club Stage, Free but Bookings Essential Ph 02 9250 1988)

Of course, there are a multitude of other interesting authors and talks on offer including (but definitely not limited to) Julia Gillard, James Patterson, Kate Grenville, Richard Flanagan, Helen Garner, Evie Wyld, Jonathan Lethem and Michael Connolly as well as some powerhouse intellectuals such as Zia Haider Rahman, Norman Doidge, Atul Gawande and Mosin Hamad. Andy Griffiths and David Walliams head up a star children’s program. Explore the full program at www.swf.org.au. There are booking links from each individual talk. Hint: it is often easier to search by writer than date.

There is also a workshop program running from 16 – 23 May. If you live in Sydney, programs will be available in this weekend’s Sydney Morning Herald.

Melanie celebrates the release of Devil in Denim this week.

Life just threw her a curveball!
As the team-owner’s daughter, Maggie Jameson grew up in the New York Saints’ stadium—glove, cap, hot dogs, and all. Baseball’s in her blood, and she’s always dreamed of the day when she would lead the Saints to victory herself. That was before her dad had to sell the team to Alex Winters. The fast-talking, fiercely attractive businessman has a baseball pedigree that’s distinctly minor league. Maggie wants to hate him but his skills of seduction, however, are off the charts.

Congratulations to Rachael on the release of Tease Me, Cowboy

Selah Davis loves her life as a journalist in Seattle (or so she says) but on a rare trip home to Marietta to cover the Copper Mountain Rodeo, she confesses to her best friends over drinks that her one regret in life is not sleeping with her high school boyfriend, Levi Monroe. Into the bar walks Levi, also home for the rodeo. When her friends dare her to proposition him for a one night stand, she’s at first appalled… but the more she thinks about remedying her one regret, the less she can get him and their electric chemistry out of her head. Selah’s always been her parents’ good daughter. Would it hurt just for one night to be a little bit bad?

Brushing off the Boss is out 15 September and is Book 2 in the Half Moon Bay series in the Bliss imprint

Claytons Report

By Lexi Bryant

Last Saturday, while most of the RWA was at the Conference at the weekend, some of us were attending The Claytons 2014.claytons14_sml

On Friday night instead of dressing up, many of us snuggled in (who was the frog onesy? ;)) grabbed a beverage of choice and got to know each other at a lively meet and greet that was enjoyed by one and all.

We were off to an early start with a presentation about the changes in the RWA and how to access all that the RWA can offer its members. The second presentation of the day was by Gwenna Sebastian and she hosted a lively discussion about e-publishing, niche markets and gays in the military. Jamie Meadows followed with a very informative session about marketing and self-publishing that I’m sure answered a lot of the questions we all have.

A break for lunch and we were back with Louise Carter, she gave us a rundown on how to operate in social media as well as sharing a few tips for how to keep our cyber security tight. Zana Bell was next with an amazingly informative session. She gave us a top down, bottom up view of how to create wonderful, living worlds for our characters to inhabit.

Last, but certainly not least was Shona Husk. She pulled out the Tarot cards to show us how to create multi-faceted characters with depth and feeling.

I had a wonderful time co-ordinating the day and I think that it went well for everyone who attended. I would like to thank everyone who attended and made it such a fun, informative day.

Is writing work or just a hobby?

What makes our ‘book boyfriends’ irresistible? Perhaps it is because romance authors have tapped into some elementary qualities and those primal struggles that we find so fascinating in men.

Settle yourself down with a lovely glass of claret – Amy Rose Bennett and I talk Regency Noir on Tuesday Book Club.

Recently did her first interview about AusRom Today. The article went live over at the Books+Publishing news website. Come on over and visit

Stacey is excited for the release of her novel, FORGET ME NOT, on August 1.

Anamae is drawn into a world which shatters everything she knew to be true.
Since her mother vanished nine years ago, Anamae and her father have shared a quiet life. But when Anamae discovers a brooch identical to her mother’s favorite pendant, she unknowingly invites a slew of trouble into their world. They’re not just jewellery, they’re part of a highly developed technology capable of cloaking the human form. Triggering the jewellery’s power attracts the attention of a secret society determined to confiscate the device – and silence everyone who is aware of its existence.

Is proud to reveal her cover for FRESH BEGINNINGS, with the release date August 5.

The new psychological thriller ALREADY DEAD by Jaye Ford is out in September, through Random House (Bantam). Jaye has also signed to write a fifth thriller for Random House. Called DEAD SLEEP, it’s scheduled for release in September 2015.

Heather’s latest release is TRACKS OF THE HEART, a collection of rural romance short stories which will be digital only.
